When you mention poker to most people they will automatically assume you are referring to Texas Hold ‘Em as this is the most common poker game that is played across the world however it is not the only one and if you are getting bored of playing the same poker game every weekend then check out these different and fun variants of this great card game.
There are generally 3 main variants of poker which are Draw, Stud or Community poker.
The most common, Texas Hold ‘Em is classed as community poker in which cards are dealt to the players and cards are placed in the middle of the table and the players have to bet depending on how strong their hand is. There are generally five cards placed face up in the middle of the table which are shared between the players to complement their individual hands. Omaha Hold ‘Em applies the same logic but instead of dealing two cards to each player, they receive four cards each and must use two of these cards as well three cards from the five possible in the community deck to create their winning deck.
Stud poker is totally different to that of community poker whereby each player receives a combination of cards, some facing up and some facing down. This type of card game is usually non positional in the sense that the player who places the first bet each round changes after each bet is made. Card games that fall under this category include – Six card stud, Seven card stud, Caribbean stud and various other games.
Draw poker is the final variant of the poker games. Draw poker involves dealing the cards so that each player has a complete hand to start with and as the game progresses cards are withdraw from the community deck so that each player can create a stronger hand than what they were originally dealt. Unlike with stud poker where positional play isn’t taken into account as each player has the chance to place the first bet, draw poker is a very positional game whereby the player sitting to the left of the dealer will always tend to make the first bet. The most prominent draw poker game played is five card draw as it is the simplest variant within poker games and the easiest to pick up for beginners. In five card stud, five cards are dealt face down in front of each player and the betting commences. Once the first bet has been made the remaining players are allowed to replace their cards with new cards to improve their hand. A second round of betting then follows this and once this round is over the winner is determined by a showdown when each player shows his/her cards and the player with the best hand wins the round.
